"And to our colors may we all be true forever!"
The party's over - The previously undefeated Newport Greyhounds fell to the Dumas Bobcats in the second round of the state playoffs 51-48. It appears that the defense must have rested a bit early. With the party over I offer hearty congratulations to Coach Brannon and the Greyhound team for a very successful 10-1 season. "All dreams must end, the party's over, it's all over, my friend."
Arrival - Mackenzie Ivy Murphy recently arrived making Terri Ivy Ramsey (NHS '75) and Randy Ramsey (NHS '80) grandparents for the first time. Mother of Mackenzie is Gail Penix Murphy (NHS 2000), daughter of Terri Ramsey and good friend Buddy Penix (one of those Tuckerman Bulldogs). Gail and Mackenzie are doing well and are at home in Fayetteville.
Departures - In a special Hound Call dated November 9, I noted that Katherine Conner, mother of Martha (NHS '68), Buddy (NHS '69) and Ann (NHS '72), left this life on November 7. I was fortunate to be able to visit my long time friends and look back upon their mother's life and the loving mark she left on many of us who grew up in Newport in the 1960s. At the family visitation I also saw Conner cousins John (NHS '66) and Sissy (NHS '68) along with "old" friends Rosemary Appleton (NHS '68), Kenny Thaxton (NHS '70), Bobby Joe Forrester (NHS '70), Terry Scoggins (NHS '71), Lee Gardner (NHS '72) and Jan Pratt (NHS '72). Reminiscing with them and the parents of many long time friends is good for the soul.
Ruth Goodyear, mother of Billy (NHS '63), Bobby (NHS '65) and Harry (NHS '69), departed this life last weekend in Charlotte, NC. A memorial service for Ruth will be held at 2pm, Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte. Memorial gifts can be made to the Organ Fund at Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211. I know the sounds of organ music would be something endeared by Ruth Goodyear, just as know that the joyous sound of laughter always present in the Goodyear home is something I will always remember. Ruth Goodyear will be missed by all who knew and loved her. I am certain the echoes of her laughter will bring us all happiness as we think of her.
Yesterday I received word that my Aunt Marie Miles Wilson of Searcy, AR passed from this life at the young age of 91. She was raking the autumn leaves in her yard as the winter of her life fell upon her. She was my father's last surviving sibling and her death closes the chapter on that generation in my personal book of life. Aunt Marie was a kind and caring soul. I will forever hold her memory in my heart.
Favorite son - Newport's "favorite son," Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe (NHS '64), visited Mountain Home this week as the keynote speaker at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet. As the outgoing president of the Mountain Home Chamber I had the honor of introducing Mike to the folks of this Ozark mountain hamlet. There was more than 400 in attendance and the Governor's message was well received by all in attendance. It is a "good feeling to know" that one of Newport's own is leading our state. Over the typical banquet meal we were able to talk about Newport past and shared experiences there as well as remember "old" friends and running buddies of the Governor like Tommy Ashley (NHS '64). I believe in Mike Beebe!
In prayer - This past Monday littermate and dear friend Mary Wynne Parker Perryman (NHS '70) endured her fiftieth chemotherapy treatment since being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the summer of 2000. What a trooper! On Thursday Mary Wynne was hospitalized with a fever. You can send messages of prayer and goodwill her way at www.caringbridge.org/visit/mwperryman. In addition to Mary Wynne, there are many Hounds of yore in need of loving thought and prayer. Whether it be in illness, loss of a loved one, or any trial of life, people need people. I ask that you lift up in prayer all "old Hounds" and any strays in need.
Thanksgiving - There is much for us all to be thankful. The Thanksgiving holiday is upon us. It is a time when we celebrate the bounties of life often surrounded by the love of family. There are some who will be alone this Thanksgiving. There will be those who are separated from family and friends at this wonderful time of year. I ask that you hold all your friends and family members close in your hearts if you are unable to be by their side. I received a message from Major General James Eddie Simmons (NHS '69) this past week from Iraq where he is serving as Deputy Commanding General of the Multi-National Corps. James Eddie requested that we keep all our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines in our prayers. I think of the many fine men and women who are serving our country and defending our freedoms. For them and for you I give thanks!
I am most always Miles from Nowhere . . . guess I'll take my time . . .
Wishing you love and laughter!
joe
