Classmates of 1970 (and assorted other Hounds),
The world is going to the Dogs! No, I'm not talking about this week's Presidential non-election. Last night the Newport Greyhounds rolled to a resounding victory over the Arkadelphia Badgers by the score of 46-26. Who let the Dogs out?!? The Hounds invaded Arkadelphia and tore at the legs of the Badger offense all night long. I had a great time visiting with "old" Newport friends knowing that it was going to be a "winning" evening for me regardless of the winner on the field since I know a lot of fine young people on both teams.
Harvey Haley, I believe you would have enjoyed both marching bands. Talking about nostalgia ... the Newport band played early Santana numbers and the Arkadelphia band put on a show with Moody Blues music. A good time was had by all! In the spirit of the evening, the Orange and Black prevailed. Those who made the trip to Arkadelphia (circa 1970) included the Mickey Doyles, the Terry Scoggins and Terry's parents, the Mike Fortunes, John Brownd's parents, and other worn out Hounds from an earlier time. Roy Drew even came over for the game from Hot Springs and we enjoyed a good visit. All I can say is "I wish you were here." Go Hounds! The young dogs travel to Searcy next week to avenge one of this season's losses. Good luck Greyhounds!
Now back to Tuesday and the Non-election. What a historical event! While all of the political pundits were calling for an extremely close race, I am certain no one imagined it would have come to what we have before us today. I hesitate to blame the geriatric crowd and beach bummin' rum heads in Florida, but there you go. Bobbye Ellen Davis, my favorite transplanted Floridian, wrote to assure me that not everyone in Florida is a "moron" (her word), but that many are referring to her State of existence called Florida as the "Land of the Living Dead." Oh well, dead people have been voting for years. Missouri even elected one to the Senate this year. It appears more clueless folks voted than did "dead" ones in this election. I'm not sure what everyone else is drinking these days, but this Clown (yours truly) is sticking to the scotch! It got me this far and I'm pretty sure it will allow me to crawl past the current chaos on into the future.
To bring a little more whimsy to the Presidential scene, I am flying out this afternoon to, of all places, Washington, DC. The intent of my trip was to visit with legislators about banking issues and to attend briefings on the "new" administration's economic platform. Now, who knows! No platform to stand on here. And I'm supposed to be there all week long. The level of scotch consumption could get pretty high. A trip to the Center of Shenanigans right now could be a lot of fun. Look for me on CNN!
To more important matters of the heart - Mary Wynne Parker is scheduled to undergo Chemo treatment #5 this week and Darlene Black (Joe's wife) will have her first chemotherapy treatment this week. I know both of them are in your prayers, especially when we join together in thought for our Class of '70 Time for Remembrance each Sunday evening at 7pm. It is my understanding that Bobby Joe Forrester is progressing well after his heart gave him a wake up call a couple of weeks back.
If you are receiving this edition of the Miles' Files for the first time, it is simply me rattling about times past and present in the lives of the Newport High School Class of 1970. There are now 61 classmates on the receiving end of reminiscent notes, caring thoughts, current events, personal realities, nonsense, and lots of love and respect. Three former teachers (Coaches Massey and Duncan and Band Director Haley) and two Methodist Youth Fellowship couselors (Phil McDonald and John Purdy) also get the Miles' Files whether they want them or not. In this writing, I have included some "old" friends from the NHS classes of 1967-71 for whom I have email addresses today. You were included either in the spirit of last night's Greyhound victory or the spirit in the bottle of Balvenie that Scottini Baker sent me. In any event, your friendship is remembered. Remember me as you wish. If you would like to continue to receive cybernotes on an irregular basis focusing primarily on the Class of 1970 (since those are who I remember best), please drop me a line. If you continue to receive the Miles' Files and don't particularly find interest in them, gently strike the delete key. Otherwise, keep those cards and letters coming.
Until I find myself back at the keyboard with you on my mind (you are always in my heart), I remain Miles from Nowhere, guess I'll take my time ... oh yeah!
